French Polynesia had a 9.5 per cent share, PNG 8.8 per cent, Cook Islands and Samoa each with 7.2 per cent, and Palau 6.8 per cent. Visitors from Australia and New Zealand continued to dominate, making up 52 per cent of the total visitor arrivals in 2016. Of this, Australia accounted for 31.2 per cent and New Zealand 20.6 per cent. New Zealand is the fastest growing source of visitors to the island countries at 13.6 per cent during 2016. Organised by the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), a crop agency tasked with promoting regional tourism, the event will also get tourism delegations from the other 15 member countries of the forum. SPTO said the event, largely recognised as the most important event in the Pacific travel calendar is held on the back of the Australian Tourism Exchange, which ends at the same venue, the Convention Centre in Darling Harbour on May 18. The SPTE continues till May 20. The Fijian delegation includes, Tourism Fiji, Yasawa Island Resort & Spa, Matamanoa Island Resort, Rosie Holiday, Tropica Island Resort, Grand Pacific Hotel, Paradise Taveuni, Fiji Airways, Tanoa Hotel Group, Mana Island Resort & Spa, Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa, Vomo Island Resort, Captain Cook Cruises, Raffe Hotel & Resorts, Kokomo Private Island Fiji and Jean-Michel Cousteau resort. The Pacific delegations will meet at least 75 international travel wholesalers and tour operators from 17 countries outside of the Pacific. "Visitors to the two-day event will be immersed in a Pacific experience that focuses on the importance of sustaining the tourism industry in line with the UNWTO theme for 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (IYSTD)," the SPTO said. "This will be done through Pacific dances and entertainment, culinary experience of Pacific foods and the uniqueness of the Pacific and its preservation for the future, creating a truly Pasifika atmosphere." There are 68 Pacific tourism and travel operators in total with Miss Pacific Islands Anne Dunn leading promotions and advocacy work for sustainable tourism. "Tourism operators in the region have always considered SPTE as a major event in their annual calendar as it provides them access to international travel and tour operators under the one roof and provides an opportunity to discuss new packages and products that have been introduced," the SPTO said. "All the 16 Pacific Island country members of SPTO will have booths at the event." The 2017 SPTE is sponsored by the Bank South Pacific. "We are extremely grateful to all our industry partners and stakeholders for their support and we are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding two days of sharing the Pacific experience," SPTO chief executive officer Chris Cocker said.
