Some Basic FactsEarthquakes are sharp movements of the earth's surface which cause shock waves (called seismic waves) that radiate out in all directions making the ground shake.
An earthquake's focus is in a location where the earth's crust is under enormous stress because of tectonic pressure. Rocks are forced to bend, building up huge amounts of stored energy like a stretched spring. Eventually the stress is so great that the rocks break (Fracture). This is felt as an earthquake. The size of an earthquake (it's magnitude) is the measure of the total energy liberated by it and is measured by the Richter scale. Processes Causing EarthquakesAll the processes that cause an Earthquake happen below the Earth. Under the heading above copy in the following to diagrams ... suggest you print the second or get a copy of global plate tectonics.
Copy the following:
Plate Tectonics The plate tectonic processes that cause earthquakes are the same as those that cause volcanic eruptions. Although they operate differently. Convectional Currents rotate in the mantle and force the plates (crust) to move apart in places and push together in others. The pushing together causes Subduction (Volcanoes/small earthquakes) or Fault lines (Earthquakes). add this diagram: Below is the waves that we have discussed can you please copy them into your notes adding the text below.
P WAVES - Primary wave/pulse waves. Like a pulse you get in morse code. Feels like the sudden shaking. S WAVES - Secondary wave/Sound wave. You here it and it feels like an up and down motion like an ocean wave or sound wave. L WAVES - Are the Longitudinal Waves. These waves give major movement from side to side and violent attack. They often dissipate quickly and are not a part of every Earthquake. Physical Changes to the LandPlease Google the following words and write meanings for them. Images could help you as well.
PDF OF DIAGRAM! Effects on peopleYou need to find out how an Earthquake effects people:
The 2 Headings you write under are
Please make sure you put in positive and negative impacts or effects. New Buildings/stronger buildings a positive. Loss of businesses, and work a negative. influences of peopleAgain you need to list and write notes on ways people can:
This will all help for your practice Geographic writing. |
